Girl Power!

I don't know about you, but when I was a little girl I was bold and brave, I was an explorer with a big imagination, afraid of nothing. I would leave the house every day looking for a new adventure. The woods behind my house was my warrior playground and I would spend hours with my friend searching for buried treasure or discovering strange creatures, creating scenarios that we would act out. As I grew into a teenager, I began to get the message that bold and brave were not qualities that were admired in girls. Being pretty, sexy and compliant were the attributes that would get you ahead. And, since it was all about being accepted and having a boyfriend in those days, I quietly acquiesced and pushed the brave and bold explorer to the background.
I've looked back on these days and felt sad for that little girl. But, that doesn't do any good at all. The only thing that matters is now and what we do with that knowledge. So, when you see a little girl who is bossy, or brave or different, encourage that in her. Let her know that she should be who she is, who she wants. Help her harness and direct her energy, her bossiness, her courage, her whatever into something that will carry her forward and serve her well as an adult. Who knows, she may be the one who truly changes the world!
